RELEASE: City and Town Officials Encourage Support for YES On 4
"We need a new mechanism to give the taxpayers a direct say in how much government should spend," LePage said. "Is TABOR perfect? No. But TABOR allows a vote of the residents when spending increases sharply. We need to reduce taxes and spending, and TABOR is a long overdue start."
Bruno, who due to a last minute scheduling conflict was not able to be at the event, sent along a written statement highlighting the reasons why he, as the vice-chair of the Raymond select board, supports Question 4.
"Question 4 is our chance to take back control of Maine's financial future," Bruno said. "We need the Taxpayer Bill of Rights now more than ever."
Also speaking was Nick Adolphsen, a member of the Appleton budget committee, and a college student at the University of Maine. Adolphsen stressed the need for Question 4 as a way to boost Maine's economy and give Mainers a stronger voice in how their tax dollars are spent.
"Question 4 will help get Maine back on track," Adolphsen said. "By giving Mainers the right to vote on property and state tax increases, my fellow Mainers and I will have a stronger voice in how government represents us." He continued, "What better way to encourage a new generation of civic minded Mainers than by giving us a voice in how we are taxed by government?"
Question 4 on the November 3 ballot asks: "Do you want to change the existing formulas that limit state and local government spending and require voter approval by referendum for spending over those limits and for increases in state taxes?"
